AUDIENCE RESEARCH

In addition, remember that without solid audience research and a clearly defined target audience, you won't get a level 4 for Research and Planning.

On top of your BBFC research and discussion, think about the following:

You must have identified a clear target audience and you must show the steps you've taken to identify it and to test your ideas against this specified audience. This doesn't mean just an endless series of questionnaires. Use the range of techniques discussed including interviews, preferably with your target audience, and the tools available through Web 2.0.

Look at similar films and research their audiences - How was it marketed to appeal to the target audience? What are the viewing figures?

You must be able to answer these questions fully and with illustrations:

1. What is the core target audience? Is there a secondary target audience?

2. How would you describe the look and tastes of your target audience? (collage with key words perhaps)

And later, after a little more research and teaching, you also need to answer this:

3. What functions does this kind of film genre serve to its audience? (uses and gratifications audience theory - why not start researching that?

Think of films which features similar plots / characters / settings / types of editing and screengrabs / comment / analyse.

Remember to sum up your findings about core target audience, any secondary audience.

All magazines do it - for instance, look at NME's summary of their target audience:

Some of you are already quite far into your research. Remember to sum up your findings about core target audience, any secondary audience.

PRIORITIES: AUDIENCE RESEARCH, PLANNING AND FILMING

Please refer to my email about what needs to be completed. Remember that you need to film this week/ weekend and next week.

Update and home learning for week starting 31.1.11

Some interesting things are finally happening on your blogs. Yeah! We love the "behind the scenes" and audience research films produced by group 4 and the cast interviews from group 3 (though it is a shame that there is not more analysis of the characters' parts referring to Barthes' character roles or Propp's ideas about structure - this would have really elevated the discussion).

You are now embedding clips and screengrabs more frequently but keep doing more of the latter - screengrabs of specific shots from existing products to follow an embedded clip would help, as well as sreengrabs of work in progress (in Garage Band, Final Cut, Afters Effects or Photoshop etc.)

Now:
- Please make sure you have completed everything that features on the list posted earlier.
- URGENTLY sort out the layout of your blogs - the group ones are nearly there but your individual blogs still have the 'followers' window, miss links, particularly to Main blog and group blog but also to your own induction blog.
- Many of you are missing earlier work such as earlier practical tasks - EVERYONE NEEDS TO EMBED AND EVALUATE PROPERLY THEIR PRELIMINARY TASKS, AND CLEARLY LABEL THEM.
- Sort out labels both on group and individual blogs.
- Bring together all the audience research and production/distribution research you have done in 2 neat packages, or maybe just one titled: "marketing strategy".
- Work on the film poster or DVD cover, even if it is only a sketch.

Next week (starting 31/1/11):
Monday and Thursday lessons: Aim to complete your final cut, including logos, titles, soundtrack.
If we absolutely need some time on the following Thursday, we will of course use it (the first 2 lessons), but ideally you will be starting your evaluation tasks by then.

In any case, you will be presenting your final product on Thursday 10th February (lesson 3 if we have used the first 2 to finish off).

You will want to show your films to as many people as possible before or immediately after that to gather as much feedback as possible. Help your viewers give you useful feedback by asking specific questions (such as the ones we used to assess rough cuts).

Thursday 9.12.11 - due in whether you're in the lesson or not

You must have identified a clear target audience by then and you must show the steps you've taken to identify it and to test your ideas against this specified audience. This doesn't mean just an endless series of questionnaires. Use the range of techniques discussed in class including interviews, preferably with your target audience, and the tools available through Web 2.0.

Think of films which features similar plots / characters / settings / types of editing and screengrabs / comment / analyse.

Similarly, you should all aim to complete one better analysis of a film opening, acting on the target I gave you last time. Choose your film carefully so that it is one of the "similar products" mentioned in your criteria, You need to show progress.
Look at this student's analyses:

You should also be updating your pitch in the light of the feedback received and post the improved / revised version. Please see handout about The Treatment again.

No one has yet posted any group meeting minutes (including group time in class).
Some groups still haven't posted the feedback on pitch.

Group 4 haven't posted a pitch - a summary of the plot is NOT a pitch.
Target audience must be part of the pitch/treatment.
